Despite rain, the weather failed to dampen the spirits of racers in their self-designed wooden carts to participate in the first-ever Kart Race Challenge at Kharang village today.
Wooden carts locally called ‘Kali Ball Bearing’ have always been in use in Meghalaya by almost every household to ferry water, vegetables and other necessities at home. They also serve as pastimes for children who would ride on them.
The event was organised by the Kharang Sports & Social Welfare Club to celebrate the state’s 50th year of statehood and the club’s 50th anniversary.
A team of Lady Keane College, Shillong bagged the first place while Shillong Momo and Anne Margaret Barr Children’s Village (AMBCV), Kharang won the second and third prize respectively.
As part of the event, the club also organised the first MTB-XCO event at the venue.
Earlier, sports minister, Banteidor Lyngdoh flagged off the race. He lauded the club for organising the event which will revive the use of wooden carts. This he said will inspire people in the urban to use them like villagers in the rural areas.
