The Meghalaya government has warned the general public that those who continue to delay or put off getting an Aadhaar number could lose out on central government benefits.
In the latest warning, Commissioner and Secretary Joram Beda said that Aadhaar enrolment and linking of the Aadhaar number to bank accounts is a must but Meghalaya’s figures are some of the lowest in the country.
“…residents without Aadhaar may soon be unable to avail themselves of several central government welfare schemes,” Beda said in a press release today. “The fact that the implementation of the Supplementary Nutrition Programme (SNP) under Anganwadi services would be seriously impacted due to the low coverage of Aadhaar enrolment and seeding … will create unrest and hue and cry among all citizens.”
A statewide Aadhaar enrolment camp programme has been launched to ramp up the effort to cover all residents of the state. This is being done mostly in an effort to reach out and enrol newborns, infants, small children, women and all others who do not yet have an Aadhaar number, especially important for those benefiting from MHIS, central stipends and scholarships, PM KISAN, the mid-day meal scheme, etc.
Aadhaar enrolment centres have been set up at every Deputy Commissioner’s office, sub-division, and block office for enrolment and update services. In view of the importance of OTP authentication, residents who have changed their mobile number linked to Aadhaar are requested to update their latest mobile number at such centres and camps.
