Delivering on her tremendous potential, Kynjailin L Mawnai claimed a bronze medal for India at the 9th South Asian Karate Championship in Colombo, Sri Lanka, the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA) informed today.
Kynjailin was participating in the women’s U-21 individual kumite -50kg category.
Her particular event was won by a karateka from Nepal, with Pakistan second and Sri Lanka joint third.
AMKA has a rich history of bringing medals and honour to Meghalaya and this is not the first time that its karatekas have won at foreign competitions. In November 2019, Wandahunshisha Mawblei won gold for India at the 5th South Asian Karate Championship in Bangladesh. Going back further, Damang Syngkon won a gold at the South Asian Games in 1999. In addition, Syngkon, Linza F Syiem and Wandashisa Warjri won Meghalaya’s only medals at the 34th National Games in 2011.
Kynjailin secured her well-deserved selection based on her bronze medal-winning performance at the Karate India Organisation (KIO) 4th Senior and U-21 National Karate Championship 2025, held in Hyderabad at the end of March. She was one of only three Meghalaya karatekas to win a medal at that championship.
In 2024 Kynjailin won medals for Meghalaya at national events in Guwahati and Maharashtra as well as in Gujarat in December 2022.
