The Khasi Students’ Union, Laban circle has demanded deletion of the ‘Bhaskar Choudhury Road’ stating naming of the road was done without the consent of the dorbar shnong and against the will of the stakeholders and the people.
The road was renamed from ‘Harisabha Road’ in June this year.
Members of the KSU met General Administrative Department Commissioner and Secretary Ripnar Lyngdoh today to flag their objections.
The KSU said they had first objected to renaming of Zig-Zag Road under the Dorbar Shnong Kenchs Trace, Oxford, Rilbong (K.O.R) in 2019 when it was renamed to Ardhendhu Choudhury Road. This, they said was done without the consent of the dorbar and people and a decision was later taken at a public meeting on November 27, 2021 to rename it after Hoping Stone Lyngdoh, Meghalaya’s veteran legislator.
Stating that no initiative has been taken by authorities the KSU said, “But to our utter surprise, the cabinet decided to further rename the roads in and around Shillong city and in this particular instance, Harisabha Road was renamed to Bhaskar Choudhury Road again without the consent of the Dorbar Shnong Laban nor the stake holders or the public concern at large which has left the people of Laban in anguish.”
