The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), has written to the National Law University Meghalaya, expressing its discontentment over the advertisement for various posts of Assistant Professor recently.
According to the KSU the advertisement has demanded extreme and excessive qualification to be met by the local indigenous candidates.
According to the union, in its previous letters and memorandums had highlighted the mismanagement of funds and illegal appointments of teaching staffs made by the Vice-Chancellor Indrajit Dube which is totally arbitrary in nature and the students’ body stated that it has a strong presumption and speculation that the said advertisement is drafted by the Vice Chancellor or under his instruction.
“…so as to decapitate or to deprive the indigenous candidates of the State from applying for such posts,” the KSU stated.
According to the students’ body this is not merely a speculation because in conjecture to the recent articles published by some of the faculty members of NLUM in local newspapers and other websites, it clearly shows their opposition against the State Reservation Policy.
According to the union, the VC is making all efforts to show that the indigenous candidates are not eligible so that the reservation policy would not apply and he would continue his nepotistic ways of appointments.
The KSU stated that in the said advertisement, the minimum qualification that is kept for the post of Assistant Professor is at Academic Level 11 which is contrary to the basic recruitment and even against UGC norms.
According to the union, Academic level 10 is the entry level position for faculty members for the post of Assistant Professor.
The students’ body stated that Academic level 11 is achieved via promotion after completion of four or more years of service and having a PhD and other attributes.
The KSU pointed out that this basic principle is applied in all the other 26 NLUs in India whereby for the post of Assistant Professor, the required academic Level is 10 which is the entry level.
“So why is NLU Meghalaya seeking for Academic level 11 as a minimum criterion in its entry level while the other NLUs in India are going with Academic level 10,” the union asked.
According to the students’ body the sole reason is that the Vice Chancellor does not want to recruit any person from the state.
The KSU stated that to substantiate its claims, the union annexed 10 recent advertisements for the post of Assistant Professor published by other NLUs across India where we can see vast difference in the eligibility criteria and the UGC guidelines whereby it will be distinct that the said advertisement is against UGC norms.
“The other excessive criteria are 60% or 7.00 CGPA in preceding degrees which is not usually asked for along with other criteria thereon. This criterion is even applied for the post of Registrar which was advertised on 24.04.2025,” the KSU stated.
According to the KSU although, not specifically mentioned in the advertisement, candidates who are qualified for such a post but fall short of the said percentage in any year of their academic careers are unable to apply for this post.
