Given the present situation in Bangladesh, the East Jaintia Hills unit of the Khasi Students Union visited the border fencing at Lailong yesterday and met the traditional heads of four dorbar shnong – Lejri, Lahalein, Huroi and Hingaria.
A meeting at Huroi with the representatives of the four dorbar shnong discussed and deliberated on how to strengthen and prevent the entry of illegal Bangladeshis to India through the border.
To date the situation is under control but the KSU’s Hingaria unit said that there is much infiltration in their village, with migrants and criminals paying local agents to help them cross the border.
The KSU members also met the Border Security Force (BSF) authorities at the border outpost where they were told that the situation is normal.
The pressure group also said that the BSF told them that the agents who help Bangladeshis to illegally enter India through the border are dealt with sternly as per the law.
The KSU said that the BSF also told them that Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) and BSF have full authority to shoot those who cross the fence and villagers on the border were urged not to cross the border to avoid any untoward incidents.
The KSU further informed that they would soon visit vulnerable areas at the border with Bangladesh, like Kuliang, Donaskur and Dona Umbluh Ampyrdit.
