The KHNAM has said it was confused with the claims made by party MLA Adelbert Nongrum on the party affairs and his offer to step down from the post of party president.
According to KHNAM president Pyndapbor Saibon, the party had met Nongrum on March 25 to discuss ways and means to reach an understanding and end all internal wrangling in the party.
“We have given time to him to think over it but since that day there was no other meeting to decide on the matter. We just saw his appeal in the media to us to come to his residence on June 17 to settle all issues and also his offer to resign as party president,” Saibon said.
“The question is how will he resign as party president when the Election Commission no longer recognises him. It may be recalled that before the Mawryngkneng Assembly by-election, the Election Commission vide its letter dated 20th October, 2021 has made it clear that it does not recognise him as president of KHNAM and that is why his candidate could not contest on KHNAM ticket in the by-election,” Saibon added.
The KHNAM chief also said that since 2019 till date, Nongrum had tried to mislead the people on party matters through the media and also making claims that he is still the party president.
“How many times will you resign as party president?” Saibon asked, adding that Nongrum had resigned as working president and member of the party’s central executive committee on July 10, 2018.
“Who elevated him to the post of president? Now, he wants to resign again. What is the meaning of this? It is also very surprising that at the same time he went to the Meghalaya High Court to file a case against the party which he never made public. Now he wants to have talks to settle all issues with the party. What is this?” Saibon said.
Saibon also denied Nongrum’s statement on March 25 that there was a demand for his resignation from the post of KHNAM president. “It is untrue and baseless since what we discussed with him is only to settle all our differences,” he added.
Stating that KHNAM would not accept any call by Nongrum through the media for a meeting, Saibon said, “This does not mean there will not be a settlement.
“Our door is still open and to make it happen, we will send a formal letter to Nongrum for a meeting at a convenient time and place and we hope that the outcome of such meeting would be amicable and in the interest of the party as a whole,” Saibon asserted.
