Members of the Khliehriat Block Congress Committee (KBCC) in East Jaintia Hills District today resigned en masse from the party after the State Congress leadership failed to concede to their demand for removal of Jhanika Siangshai as the party candidate from Khliehriat constituency.
The KBCC members led by the president Remistar Dkhar and general secretary Chrispin N. Dkhar said that they have recently discussed with State Congress president Vincent H. Pala regarding their demand.
They also said that a meeting of the KBCC held at Khliehriat yesterday and attended by hundreds of Congress members from the KBCC, women’s wing, youth wing, units and circles has unanimously decided to leave the party for not honouring their sentiment.
Accusing the State Congress leadership of announcing the candidate from Khliehriat constituency without consulting the leaders of KBCC, Remistar Dkhar said that Jhanika Siangshai who was fielded as the party candidate had resigned from Congress on August 23, 2022 and joined the NPP September 11, 2022.
“We are shocked by the decision of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee to field a candidate who is still the president of NPP Mahila Committee in Khliehriat constituency. The decision by the leaders of the party is unacceptable and has hurt the sentiment of all Congress members in our constituency,” Dkhar added.
