The centre continues to remain silent on the demand for inclusion of Khasi language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution even as discussions were taken up in the Parliament in the recent past.
The four-decade old demand initiated since the early 1970s has never seen any headway made despite rallies and resolution by the State legislative assembly.
Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS) President DR Nonglait said no reason was given by the centre on the delay. “The Ministry of Home affairs gave us just one reason that Khasi is one of the 38th languages in the country, which demand has been kept pending for consideration,” he said.
Meanwhile, the KAS will intensify their demand by holding a national seminar on Khasi language, literature and culture YMCA, Delhi in September to be attended by intellectuals and lecturers.
