Meghalaya’s Rajya Sabha MP, Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi, has sanctioned Rs 10 lakh to build a viewpoint at Rit Lawai in Nongjrong.
Nongjrong, which falls under Mawkynrew block, is famous for its sunrises when the valley below is covered with clouds. Yesterday, Kharlukhi, Mawkynrew MLA Banteidor Lyngdoh, block officials and the members of the Nongjrong dorbar shnong visited the site.
Lyngdoh thanked Kharlukhi (both of whom are National People’s Party colleagues) for sanctioning funds for the construction of the viewpoint, which he said will uplift tourism in the area.
The legislator said the MP decided to make the contribution after seeing the success of the ‘Escape to Nongjrong’ festival, which was held on February 16-17 on the banks of Umngot River.
Lyngdoh also called upon all stakeholders to join hands to promote the tourism sector in the state, which, he said, is an area that can provide employment to the youth.
The Rs 10 lakh sanction will not cover the full cost of the project but Lyngdoh will allocate funds from the MLA scheme and has also approached the Chief Minister for further help.
He also informed that the Mawkynrew Tourism Sociable Society (MTSS) will set up an information centre in coordination with the Tourism Department for the benefit of visitors to the area. The MTSS will also train the youth of the area in the various aspects of tourism.
