Newly elected KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pyniaid Sing Syiem stressed that the council as empowered by the Sixth Schedule to protect unique customary practices and tradition of the indigenous tribe should look carefully into the desire of the Ministry of Home Affairs to bring the 125th constitutional amendment to the Sixth Schedule and to insert clauses in the new amendment that will not weaken but further strengthen the council power.
Speaking in the house after his election, Syiem said, “We will follow up with the State and Central governments on the status of this proposed amendment of the Sixth Schedule so that we can give more views and suggestions as suggested by many concerned stakeholders.”
Lamenting on the various bill passed by the KHADC that has been ignored the moment it reaches the District Council Affairs Department, Syiem however praised the MDA government for setting up of an expert committee to thoroughly look into the bills passed by the council before they are sent to the Governor for his assent.
“The expert committee that has again been re-notified on June 13 will help to speed up the council bills to get the Governor assent,” he said.
He further said that the council is an autonomous body and nowhere in any provision of the Sixth Schedule or House rules that bar any political party to lead the Executive Committee.
“And I don’t agree that we cannot trust each other as members but I have 101 percent trust and belief that we can work together,” he added.
He also said that the EC will soon visit the border areas to look into the hardships faced by the people there as suggested by Mawhati MDC Charles Marngar even as he informed that he has written to the district administration Karbi Anglong not to misuse its authority and disturb the public peace in the border areas.
