Shillong, Oct 10: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has urged the regional committees constituted for the second phase of the border negotiations with Assam to speed up talks for lasting peace between the communities of both the states along the inter-state border.
A day after a clash broke out in Lapangap that killed a villager, the JSU stated that certain individuals intruded and disrupted peace at the paddy field belonging to the Pnar residents, while harvesting. “It has been observed that, from time to time, despite the strict escort and vigilance maintained by both the Meghalaya and Assam Police, Karbi individuals continue to engage in acts of aggression and intrusion, even in the presence of law enforcement personnel from both states,” it said.
Expressing sorrow over the loss of life the JSU said the clash was unfortunate and hoped that such incidents will never occur in the future. “At the same time, we strongly condem the actions of those Karbi individuals who trespassed into the area belonging to the Pnar community, showing complete disregard for the status quo and a lack of respect toward the local people during their harvesting season,” the union added.
