Jowai, Apr 22: The Jaiñtia Student Movement (JSM), Western Region was assured that teachers will be made available in all Lower and Upper Primary Schools after its members briefly locked down the office of the District School Education Officer in Jowai, West Jaiñtia Hills district today.
The student’s organisation had on April 8 petitioned the Director of School Education and Literacy (DSEL) through the Deputy Commissioner and met the Inspector of School Education, Jowai on April 14 with a demand to appoint required teachers in the primary schools located in the district.
JSM Education Secretary, Ribok Biam said that the organisation had given a week time for the authorities to act on the demand, but failed. He said altogether 226 teachers in lower primary schools and 14 in UP schools are the requirements in the district.
Following an assurance from the office that the government has decided to appoint MTET passed teachers the students organisation decided to call off agitations on the issue.
Meanwhile, District School Education Officer of Jaiñtia Hills, A. Syiem informed that an order for appointment of teachers in LP and UP schools was released by the Education Department.
