The opposition against the proposals for delimitation of constituencies under Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) continues.
Today the JHADC delimitation committee headed by its chairman Dr. Dakyntuhimi Lyngdoh conducted a public hearing at Khliehriat West community hall for ten constituencies of East Jaiñtia Hills which include Muthlong-Sohkymphor, Tuber, Musniang-Rangad, Rymbai-Khliehriat, Sutnga-Narwan, Sutnga-Nongkhlieh, Sumer, Saipung-Nongkhlieh, Narpuh, and Bataw-Lakadong.
People of Saipung including sitting MDC Arbor Hima Darnei expressed their displeasure with the proposal to create Saipung-Nongkhlieh constituency. They demanded that the existing Saipung constituency should be retained.
The Dorbar Chnong Dkhiah East was opposed to the move to tag the village with Sutnga-Narwan constituency. Similarly, villagers of Sahkai, Jalaphet Bri Sutnga and others also objected to the proposal to bring them under Sutnga-Narwan constituency.
The proposal to create the Sutnga-Nongkhlieh constituency was also opposed by villagers of Chiehruphi who demanded it be retained with the Narpuh constituency. They also threatened to boycott the upcoming JHADC elections if their demand was not met, since according to Sutnga-Nongkhlieh is located around 50 km from Chiehruphi.
Residents of Dieñchynrum opposed the proposal to tag their village with Sutnga-Nongkhlieh constituency. They demanded to be retained in the Rymbai-Khliehriat constituency.
Similarly, villagers of Moolamylliang are opposed to the move to bring them under Sutnga-Nongkhlieh and wanted to remain with Rymbai-Khliehriat constituency.
Even the proposal for tagging Latyrke village with Sutnga-Nongkhlieh was also opposed by the villagers who also urged the delimitation committee to respect their sentiment.
Residents of Huroi, Leijri and Lahalein expressed their opposition to the proposal to tag the three villages with Bataw-Lakadong constituency. They also said that they wanted to remain with Narpuh constituency which is closer to them.
In view of the widespread opposition against the delimitation proposals, the delimitation committee has asked all those who have any objections to send their petitions to the committee on or before July 19.
