The Synjuk ki Waheh Shnong ka Ri Jaiñtia has backed down over its opposition to smart electricity meters, saying that it had been caused by miscommunication.
Power Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that the headmen body had met him recently about the issue.
“When they came to meet me they told me that they are against the installation of smart meters because they can be manipulated,” he said today. “I asked them to prove it and if they can prove it we will immediately file an FIR at the police station. After 20 minutes of discussion across the table, they said that there must have been a miscommunication.”
However, they still asked the minister to ensure that public awareness campaigns be conducted before their installation in Jaiñtia Hills to gain acceptance from the people.
Tynsong said this during a convention organized by the National People’s Youth Front (NPYF), his party’s youth wing, here.
On the power scenario, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma also made statements during the convention that all 342 transformers that are not working will be replaced.
Stating that Tynsong had apprised him of the matter and told him that the financial implication for replacing all the transformers is too great, Sangma said, “We will replace all the transformers to ensure that every village that has no power connectivity because of the problem of the transformer will be restored.”
