An alert has been raised by people who have received unsolicited individual messages on whatsapp from a business account of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) giving advice against fake messages.
The RBI had recently launched its official WhatsApp channel (9999 041 935) to provide verified financial updates and alerts to the public which aims to improve public awareness and safety in the digital financial space by disseminating information on topics like banking regulations, digital payment security, and financial literacy.
While the number is indeed as the RBI’s WhatsApp channel for its customers, but it is clearly written that no individual messages are ever sent from this number.
RBI during its official launch had mentioned that a user, who wants to subscribe to its verified WhatsApp account, can simply scan the QR code provided on the RBI website or in official announcements. Upon scanning, they will be directed to the RBI’s channel where they can opt to receive regular updates.
Once subscribed, users will receive verified alerts and updates straight from the RBI, ensuring authenticity and credibility of the information they receive.
This reporter tried to take a screen shot of the introductory page but could not as it said that the aap used forbids.
After taking a photograph of the screen, it was sent to the East Khasi Hills police for verification whether this is the RBI number and it was confirmed that the number is hacked.
Attempts were made to reach the RBI for official confirmation from their end. The office here only has a land line which did not seem to be manned. There were no mobile numbers for contact. Their comments are awaited.
