The Federation of Khasi Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP) today said that the State government should install smart meters on a pilot project basis in all government offices and properties before introducing it to the consumers.
Expressing its discontentment over the government’s decision to introduce smart meters in the State, the organisation said it is a new concept and the department should take the initiate to create awareness.
While the functions of a smart meter is as per advanced technology, in which the reading will be through communication, internet networks the FKJGP said the State has poor network connectivity and consumers will face problems with installation of smart meters.
FKJGP working president, Dundee Cliff Khongsit who also met deputy chief minister, Prestone Tynsong on the matter has also sought clarification on the escalation of price of smart meters. He said in the past two years, it was reported that the smart meters cost Rs.3750 but at present it has rise to Rs. 5000 while as per the LOA the cost is Rs 9444.44.
Stating that the FKJGP has no intension to go against any advance practice by the department to promote or to conduct any activities which will benefit the State, Khongsit said, introducing smart meters as a pilot project would enable consumers to understand its merits and demerits.
“If it is successful then the same can be extended to all the consumers of the State. As for now the federation will still strongly opposed unless and until the outcome has not been shown for the public interest,” he added.
