An inquiry has been constituted by the West Jaintia Hills district administration into yesterday’s death of a pregnant woman at the Maternal and Child Hospital in Jowai.
Pynche Bareh (37), from Jalaphet in East Jaintia Hills, was referred to the Jowai hospital on Tuesday from Sutnga Community Health Centre where she initially went for treatment for bleeding.
Yesterday she reported abdominal pain at 5:30pm and then again at 6:20pm and her condition began to deteriorate from 8:10pm. She was finally declared dead at 9:15pm. Her baby also did not survive.
The committee comprises the Additional Deputy Commissioner of WJH B Blah, the District Medical and Health Officer and a gynaecologist and paediatrician deputed by the EJH district administration. The committee has been asked to submit its report by Monday.
Meanwhile, the Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) met with the DMHO of WJH to present a letter calling for an inquiry and justice for the deceased.
The JNC ascribed the deaths to “alleged incompetence and negligence of the medical staff on duty”, saying that it has received “alarming” reports of a significant failure in the standard of care provided.
It also called for compensation to be paid to the grieving family.
