Shillong, May 12: Accusing the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) of “silence” over amending its voting rules, the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) today said it will now approach Governor CH Vijayashankar to see its demands met.
KHNAM wants amendments made to Para 128 of the district council rules, which govern franchise and electoral rolls. This follows the successful amendment to such rules in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council to prevent non-tribals from involvement in the voting process.
Thomas Passah, the KHNAM working president, said the party had submitted multiple representations to the KHADC on the subject but had not received any communication. “After what happened at Garo Hills we expected that the KHADC would see the importance to amend the said rules at the earliest to protect the district council,” he said.
“It is the duty of the KHADC to do the needful and it is up to the EC (executive committee), whether they will sideline the issue as done by the past EC or act swiftly. But the accountability and responsibility is of the EC and whatever the outcome we will hold the current EC responsible,” Passah added.
