Shillong, Aug 4: The Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya Frontier today inaugurated the SPANDAN League 2026 under the Khelo India initiative with the commencement of its volleyball tournament, marking the first of the three sporting disciplines to be conducted under the league.
The event also forms part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the BSF and reaffirms the force’s commitment to promoting sports, youth engagement and community participation.
The tournament was inaugurated by Insp Gen OP Upadhyay in the presence of senior BSF officers, distinguished guests and participating teams. Addressing the gathering, Insp Gen Upadhyay encouraged the players to uphold the highest standards of sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork and fair play while striving for excellence both on and off the field. He highlighted the role of sports in fostering character, unity and national integration, particularly among the youth.
The volleyball tournament is being organised by 02 Battalion, BSF Meghalaya at the NEIGRIHMS Sports Complex, Mawdiangdiang. A total of 32 teams from across Meghalaya, comprising nearly 150 players and team officials, are participating in the competition. The participating teams are distributed across four categories – 10 in the senior men’s division, eight in the senior women’s and seven each in junior boys’ and junior girls’.
The SPANDAN League 2026 has been conceived to promote a vibrant sporting culture while encouraging fitness, discipline, teamwork and a healthy lifestyle among the youth. Besides volleyball, the league will also feature basketball and football tournaments.
