Seven pressure groups threatened to intensify agitation across the State “be it in any form” to achieve the Inner Line Permit (ILP) including setting up of entry-exit points, resolution to the inter-state boundary dispute and inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
The decision was taken at a meeting held in Tura by various pressure groups—KSU, FKJGP, HNYF, RBYF, GSU, AYWO and ADE—which was attended by all leaders from the Khasi Jaiñtia and Garo Hills.
In a statement to the press, FKJGP chief organising secretary Kitboklang Nongphlang informed that the meeting resolved to hold agitations across the State which will be announced soon.
“We will hold peaceful agitations across the State and if our demands are still not heard by both the central and state governments we will not dare to intensify our agitations be it in any form.”
Nongphlang said that the demands are no longer subjects to be taken up by only the groups alone, but by the people. He said, at the meeting, leaders also recalled the Hill State movement and said that if such a mass movement could be organised in recent times, the demands could be met.
“We would also urge the public to be prepared in the days to come,” he added.
