Despite complaints made and highlighted several times with the authorities, those who are illegally constructing buildings at the municipal compound in Goraline, Laitumkhrah, continue to do so in defiance of the law, local resident Wankitbok Pohshna has claimed.
The issue was flagged last year by Pohshna but his complaints appear to have fallen on deaf ears.
In February last year notices were served by the CEO of the Shillong Municipal Board to those who were illegally constructing structures on the said land but no action was apparently taken and the buildings that were termed as unauthorised by the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority now stand completed and are occupied.
In February this year a complaint was also made to the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner on the dumping of garbage into the Thangsning stream, which is a tributary of the Wah Umkhrah river, but, again, no action has been taken to control direct dumping of solid waste from the municipal compound into the stream, Pohshna alleged.
He added that the lack of action has led to the area becoming a hub of anti-social activities, such as drug peddling and rise in theft.
