If Farmers Cannot Survive, Who Will Feed Us Tomorrow?

      Editor,

The heartbreaking image of Meghalaya’s farmers giving away six tonnes of cabbage free of cost should not merely evoke sympathy, it should awaken our collective conscience. When those who feed society cannot even recover the cost of cultivation, something is fundamentally wrong.

A farmer does not simply grow vegetables; a farmer cultivates life itself. Before the first ray of sunlight touches our homes, farmers are already in their fields, battling uncertain weather, rising production costs, pests, transportation challenges, and market fluctuations. Yet, after months of sacrifice, they are often rewarded with prices that do not even cover their investment. This is not just an economic injustice, it is an injustice to human dignity.

Meghalaya’s farmers produce some of the freshest and healthiest food in the country. Much of our produce is naturally grown with minimal chemical inputs, making it highly valued in an age when consumers across the world are increasingly seeking organic and healthy food. Yet, ironically, the very hands that nourish us are struggling to survive.

The farmers’ movement in Delhi reminded the nation of one undeniable truth: farmers are not asking for charity; they are asking for fairness. Whether in the plains of Punjab or the hills of Meghalaya, the aspiration is the same, to earn a dignified livelihood through honest labour. Their voices deserve not division, but dialogue; not neglect, but meaningful action.

The crisis facing our cabbage farmers today is not merely about one crop or one season. It is a warning that unless agricultural markets become more transparent, unless fair pricing mechanisms are strengthened, unless storage, processing, and value-addition facilities are expanded, many more farmers may abandon agriculture altogether.

And if farmers stop farming, no amount of money can feed an empty plate.

To the hardworking farmers of Meghalaya, I wish to say this: please do not lose hope. Your labour is not in vain. Your perseverance feeds every family, strengthens our economy, preserves our environment, and safeguards our future. The people of Meghalaya stand with you, and your struggle deserves the attention of every policymaker and every citizen.

A prosperous Meghalaya cannot be built on the hardship of its farmers. Let this difficult moment become a turning point—one that inspires stronger policies, fairer markets, better infrastructure, and renewed respect for those who work the land.

A nation’s true wealth is not measured by the height of its buildings but by the strength of the hands that grow its food.

Let us honour our farmers not only with words of gratitude but with policies of justice.

Because Without farmers, there is no food. Without food, there is no future. When we protect our farmers, we protect our future. Because the day our farmers stop farming is the day hunger begins.
