The Hynniewtrep Youths Council (HYC) will intensify its agitation this week if the state government prolongs the wait for the release of student scholarships.
Speaking to Highland Post today, HYC education secretary Enlang Sawian said that there has been no communication from the government following the pressure group’s protest along with NEHUSU (North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union) recently.
Complaints have also been made by many students about problems with the process of verification to see whether they are eligible for the scholarships or not.
“When it comes to freshers, around 90 percent of them have not received anything to date,” Sawian said.
Stating that the delay in the release of the scholarship has put students, especially those coming from weak economic backgrounds, in great hardship to pay their fees, he said that the HYC will launch another surprise agitation to open the ears of the authority concerned.
“Our message to the government is to give the students their rights at the right time and stop putting them through any inconveniences. The government’s silence only shows their lack of responsibility towards the student community and their future. If students hailing from weak economic backgrounds drop out because they cannot pay their fees then the government has to take full responsibility,” Sawian warned.
NEHUSU and the HYC recently protested in front of the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) office here to demand the immediate release of scholarships, both fresh and renewals.
