The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) today put the office of the Director of Higher and Technical Education (DHTE) in Laitumkhrah under lock and key for failing to release pending scholarships for more than 27,000 students.
The HYC’s education cell took the step after receiving several complaints about having to wait for the scholarships.
HYC leader Enlang Sawian told reporters that last year it took agitation for the scholarships to be released. For this year two tranches have been released but the last one is still pending. The state government has put the blame on the Centre for the delay, though that does not help the 27,000 who have to pay their semester fees, for example.
Sawian said that an RTI revealed that last year the delay was due to, the Union Ministry of Education said, the state government not submitting utilisation certificates on time.
He also blamed the inefficiency of the state’s Education Minister, alleging that he has failed to look into the matter.
