Mawkyrwat, Oct 13: The Hynñiewtrep Youths Council (HYC) held a public meeting at Umdohlun in South West Khasi Hills district to mobilise support against uranium mining in the State.
The HYC had taken exception to a directive of the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) that exempts uranium and other atomic mineral mining projects from mandatory public consultations and hearings.
Earlier, it had demanded the State government to convene a special session of the Meghalaya Assembly to pass a resolution opposing the Centre’s directive and to press the Union government to abandon any uranium mining programmes in the state.
HYC President Roykupar Synrem said that the Meghalaya government should clearly communicate its opposition to the Centre, stating that uranium mining would not be allowed under any circumstances.
He urged the state government to respond to the Ministry to permanently close the chapter on uranium mining in Meghalaya and to pass a resolution in the Assembly, saying “No to Uranium.”
