The HYC Shillong City has expressed disapproval of the order by the district administration to implement an odd-even number system for passenger vehicles plying towards Khyndai Lad and Motphran in order to reduce traffic congestion in these areas.
In a statement issued today, the organisation said that passenger vehicles should not be squarely blamed for the traffic jam in the city. It also said that the authorities should find out other measures to ease traffic congestion instead of targeting passenger vehicles alone.
The HYC Shillong City said that student buses should be operated by all educational institutions in the city to ferry and drop students. It also said that staff buses should be operated for government employees.
“Passenger vehicles coming from Assam going towards Silchar should be made to ply through Shillong by-pass and those passenger vehicles or tourist vehicles coming from Assam to Shillong should be made to stop at ISBT, Mawiong,” it added.
The HYC also said that long term measures for easing traffic congestion in Shillong include widening of roads, construction of parking lots and flyovers.
Calling for early completion of Shillong Western bypass, the organisation suggested for construction of a new roads which included a road from Mawblei – Madanrting – Lumparing – Upper Shillong, road from Mawtawar – Mawpat to New Shillong, and road from Malki – Shillong Peak – Laitkor.
Other suggestions include speeding up the New Shillong Township and shifting of government offices there, setting up of educational institutions, hospitals and other amenities in areas outside Shillong and establishing more markets in rural areas and in areas adjoining the city.
