Members of the Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC), traditional heads and border residents burnt the effigies of the Chief Minister and his deputy at Bakhalapara village in Ri Bhoi today to register their protest against the border agreement entered with Assam.
A public meeting was held at the village which was attended by HYC central body and district members, traditional chiefs of Hima Jirang and Hima Nongspung as well as the villagers wherein they dwelt on the agreement entered between the two states.
Speakers at the meeting said that the boundary settlement was done without any consultation and without proper verification of land documents and historical facts.
HYC president, Roberjune Kharjahrin said the state government should review the agreement. He said the organisation will back border villages to fight for justice and will not accept the pact, as the land holding system in Meghalaya differs from that of Assam.
“The traditional chiefs of Raids, Himas, villages and landowners should have been consulted before the government goes ahead with the agreement. They instead chose to disrespect and dared to sign the MoU blindly,” he said.
