The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has summoned East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Rituraj Ravi to appear before it in person on June 20 following an incident on Sunday evening in Shillong at the site of the hunger strike of Bindas Syiem.
The MHRC has also called for a detailed report from the Director General of Police into the matter.
Syiem had been on hunger strike in protest over a dilapidated road; she called off her demonstration today after receiving assurances from the government.
However, on the night of June 9, Ravi had gone to the site of the protest at the parking lot near the Secretariat with the ostensible intention of taking Syiem for a medical examination given her lack of food. This was resolutely opposed by her supporters.
Complaints have also been lodged with the Meghalaya State Women’s Commission and the Director General of Police on the incident.
