Shillong, Sep 26: State Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Saturday inaugurated the 1st Amwi Higher Secondary School, Thangbuli Knock-Out Football Tournament 2026–27, organised to generate funds for the development and functioning of the school.
The first match was scheduled between Jarain Cultural & Sports Club and Tympang Club Pdengshakap.
Disuk Tariang, Member of Amwi Higher Secondary School, stated that the school, established in 2017, has completed nine years and has faced challenges, particularly in relation to funding. He appealed for support for the development of the school and requested consideration for bringing the institution under the Adhoc system.
K. Passah, Assistant Director, Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, highlighted Thangbuli’s contribution to football and encouraged students and young people to explore other sporting disciplines, including boxing, basketball and athletics. He also urged young players to aspire to compete beyond the State level.
Medling Swer, Local MDC, appreciated the organisation of the football tournament as an initiative to generate funds for Amwi Higher Secondary School and welcomed the educational and sports infrastructure initiatives being undertaken at Thangbuli.
Murtimom Khyrim, President, YSWC Thangbuli, highlighted the village’s contribution to football and noted that players from Thangbuli have represented the State. He appealed for continued support towards the development of the playground and sporting activities in the village.
