Shillong, Jun 9: The youth wing of the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has written to the West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner to call for a statue or monument to the late Hopingstone Lyngdoh.
Lyngdoh, who died at the age of 86 in 2015, was a leader of the Hill State Movement, served as Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) with 27 years as an MDC, was Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya during his 43 years as an MLA and had also been the MP for Shillong constituency in the Lok Sabha.
“His contributions as a legislator, statesman and champion of democratic values have left a lasting legacy in the history of our state,” the HSPDP youth wing said in its letter.
It also put forth recommendations for salient features of the statue and possible locations within the Nongstoiñ area, the constituency he represented for most of his adult life.
