The Garo Student’s Union (GSU) has given 12-days time for authorities to clear the garbage at Rongkhon Songgital dumping ground that has posed a threat to a cemetery nearby and the Ringrey stream.
GSU vice president, Franky N Marak in a complaint to the executive engineer of Urban Affairs in Tura said that the unscientific and unhygienic disposal of waste and garbage at the dumping ground is leading to devastating environmental pollution.
Marak said that the Tura Municipal Board is carelessly dumping waste in Rongkhon Songgital whereby the cemetery now is being covered in waste, which has terribly angered the immediate family members of the deceased.
“Many of non-biodegradable and untreated liquid waste are even falling and pouring down to Ringrey stream which poses a threat to the aquatic life and the people along the stream who uses the water for daily purposes,” he said.
Urging the authorities to build a wall to prevent the garbage from spilling over to the cemetery, the GSU vice president said, “Delay in this matter cannot be further entertained. We are giving 12 days time to kindly clear the garbage and build retaining wall immediately otherwise we will take strict action if our demand is not fulfilled.”
