The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Eastern Zone has launched a poster campaign demanding the immediate transfer of the District Transport Officer (DTO) from Williamnagar.
The DTO has been accused of unprofessional conduct and unethical behaviour towards the general public.
According to the GSU, the officer spends most of his time in his official quarters and rarely attends office. Instead of performing his duties from the office, he reportedly signs documents from his residence, forcing citizens to visit his quarter to obtain signatures.
“There have also been disturbing claims that he is sometimes found in an inebriated state and uses disrespectful and inappropriate language when dealing with members of the public,” the union said.
The union alleged that the officer insulted and disrespected its members when they went to get his signature for a diver licence application at his quarters on May 30.
“Such behaviour is unacceptable and not tolerated. The government should immediately replace the office with a sincere, responsible, and people-friendly person in his place,” the GSU demanded.
The union said the poster campaign marks the beginning of its protest. If there is no positive response from the authorities, the GSU said it will be compelled to intensify its movement through peaceful means, beginning with office picketing of the DTO.
