Meghalaya crossed a terrible landmark, with the total number of Covid-related deaths hitting 1,009 after a staggering 21 were recorded across the state today.
June 2 was the last time that the state saw a single-day death toll bigger than this. There have now been 64 coronavirus deaths in Meghalaya in the last five days alone, which has taken the seven-day rolling average to 11.14, the highest it has been since June 10.
The increasing death toll is surely linked to the continued spread of the virus in the state. Today 558 new cases were reported, which is the fourth consecutive day of 500-plus infections. The seven-day rolling average of infections reached 487.29, a jump of 21 percent in the last five days and also the highest it has been since June 10.
Twelve fatalities were recorded in East Khasi Hills, as well as two each in West Garo Hills, West Jaiñtia Hills and West Khasi Hills and one each in South West Garo Hills, South Garo Hills and Ri-Bhoi.
East Khasi Hills recorded 213 new cases today (highest since July 4), West Jaiñtia Hills 115, West Garo Hills 85, Ri-Bhoi 52, South West Khasi Hills 35, West Khasi Hills 24, East Garo Hills 11, North Garo Hills seven, South Garo Hills seven, East Jaiñtia Hills five and South West Garo Hills four.
There were also 411 recoveries today. West Garo Hills accounted for 148, East Khasi Hills 136, West Jaiñtia Hills 30, North Garo Hills 20, East Garo Hills 19, South Garo Hills 16, South West Garo Hills 11, Ri-Bhoi 11, East Jaiñtia Hills 10, West Khasi Hills eight and South West Khasi Hills two.
There are now 4,539 active Covid-19 cases in the state. East Khasi Hills alone accounts for 1,426 active cases, West Garo Hills 1,022, Ri-Bhoi 638, West Jaiñtia Hills 436, South West Khasi Hills 279, West Khasi Hills 208, North Garo Hills 150, East Garo Hills 125, South West Garo Hills 97, South Garo Hills 95 and East Jaiñtia Hills 63.
In all, Meghalaya has had 59,904 Covid-19 cases, of which 4,539 are active, 54,356 have recovered and 1,009 have died from the virus. The recovery rate has declined to 90.74 percent. The fatality rate rose to 1.68 percent. The seven-day rolling average for new cases jumped to 487.29 and has increased for new deaths to 11.14.
