Four pressure groups in West Garo Hills have urged the district administration to lay down restrictions for trucks from Bhutan to travel through the deteriorated Selsella-Balachanda road.
According to the groups, Federation of Khasi Jaiñtia and Garo People, A’chik Students’ Welfare Association, Garo Students Union and Garoland State Movement Committee, the road has deteriorated as a result of heavy traffic and its poor condition and hence there is a need for restrictions in order to safeguard the safety of local commuters and prevent additional damage.
They lamented that despite the government’s receipt of numerous requests for repairs, no action has been taken to rectify the situation.
While acknowledging the recommendation to utilise the Selsella road due to the damage of a major RCC bridge near Konachar under Agia-Medipara-Phulbari Tura (AMPT) road the pressure groups said, “The road is readily accessible to the movement of other vehicles; however, Bhutan lorries must be strictly forbidden from using it.”
