Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who is in charge of the Home Department, today warned of strong action against any person or group involved in extortion from businesses.
Speaking to reporters, Tynsong said the law will take strict action against those involved in such acts. He was reacting to reports that the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) rebel group is sending demand notes and that pressure groups are also illegally collecting money from businesses under the guise of voluntary donations.
The Deputy CM urged private individuals and traders who have received demand notes to inform the government, promising that the authorities will take necessary action. He expressed regret that many of those who receive demand letters do not inform the authorities, which has delayed efforts to curb this issue.
