In response to the recent threat issued by the outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), the State Government declared on Saturday its commitment to taking decisive action against those disrupting the peace and violating the law in the State.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma addressed the prevailing law and order situation and the new threat from the HNLC, stating, “The police have been proactive in the past, making numerous arrests and neutralizing many threats. The police are working tirelessly to ensure that individuals involved in activities disturbing the peace and law and order in the State face strong consequences. We are leaving no stone unturned.”
The Chief Minister disclosed, “We held a security meeting with the Deputy Chief Minister in charge of home affairs, the Director General of Police (DGP), the Chief Secretary, and discussed various aspects of the situation.”
“We are actively addressing the issue and ensuring that anyone attempting to disrupt peace will face necessary action,” he added.
The banned HNLC had asserted on Friday that the police officer accountable for the alleged killing of its former leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew would face repercussions.
In a statement, the group claimed that Thangkhiew’s death in what they believe was a staged encounter constitutes a political conspiracy involving certain ministers of the MDA government.
“We have identified the individual responsible for Bah Che’s (Cheristerfield) demise… The repeated falsehoods and attempts by the police to conceal the truth are evident, despite their efforts to bury it. However, trying to suppress the truth only delays its eventual revelation,” HNLC warned, threatening retribution against Thangkhiew’s killer.
