Former MLA Ardent M Basaiawmoit today expressed disappointment at the current law and order situation in Meghalaya.
“There’s a need to engage more personnel to prevent and put a check on the rising cases of attempted IED blasts in the capital of the state,” Basaiawmoit said.
He said this one day after the outlawed militant HNLC group took credit for planting a dud IED outside the office of the National People’s Party (NPP) in the heart of the administrative area of Shillong, a lapse of security which was all the more glaring as the incident occurred on the day of the Vice-President of India’s visit to the city.
“The government failure is just pushing our youth more to the insurgency which is an alarming and dangerous trend,” Basaiawmoit said.
With regards to the demand from several quarters for the suspension of the police officers involved in the raid that led to the killing of ex-militant Cherishterfield Thangkhiew in August, he said, “We first have to understand who sanctioned the operation that day. Was the order to eliminate Thangkhiew sanctioned by the government or done by the police personnel on their own?”
