The state government is still unable to give a clear date when Sohra civil sub-division will be upgraded to its own district.
The state cabinet held one of its roving meetings in the tourist town in the southern part of East Khasi Hills today and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma was asked about what progress has been made in the upgrade.
Sangma’s government has made noises in the past about making Sohra the headquarters of a new district but today said that there are many challenges that need to be addressed before this becomes a reality.
The CM said that his government is all for bringing the administration closer to the people but there are geographical and financial challenges.
“It’s not that we are saying yes or no to the demand but these things need to be examined in detail,” Sangma said. “There’s a lot of areas and people that need to be brought together and discussed.”
The demand for a separate district, spearheaded by the Sohra District Demand Forum, is being examined but to commit to it right now is not possible, he added.
