Shillong, Sep 15: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the state government is aware of concerns raised by villagers in Langpih along the Meghalaya-Assam border over attempts to enrol them in Assam’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
Sangma said the matter has not yet been discussed at his level but the Political Department is looking into it and the Deputy Commissioner has also been informed.
“I’m aware of this issue. The Political Department is looking into this. We have also mentioned it to the Deputy Commissioner. Our department and administration are aware,” Sangma said.
He said there were some other minor issues along the border and assured that the government would take them up with its Assam counterparts if genuine concerns were reported.
“If there’s any place where our people are not comfortable with anything and it’s a genuine case, then we will take it up with our counterparts in Assam and ensure that the problem is addressed,” he said.
On the law and order situation in the city, Sangma said there had been tensions in the past but the government was working to maintain peace and tranquillity.
He said violence would not be tolerated and action would be taken against those found involved in such incidents.
“We are also very clear that in all of these discussions, violence is not acceptable,” he said, adding that action was being taken wherever there was evidence of individuals being involved in violence.
Sangma said the situation was under control and that the government was continuously monitoring it. He added that security forces were already deployed in large numbers and their presence would be strengthened if required.
At the same time, he said the government would continue engaging with different stakeholders to address concerns through dialogue.
