The 155th Garo Hills Day will be celebrated on September 24 in Tura.
It is the same date when ANVC and ANVC-B sealed the settlement to strengthen the Autonomous District Councils in Meghalaya.
According to former ANVC-B leader and Tura MDC Bernard N. Marak, the celebration was planned accordingly to coincide the two events on the same date “so that the lost history of the Garos can be revived”.
Sangma said that the Garo Hills Act of 1869 was approved by the Governor General which excluded the Garo Hills from Zamindari system by establishing an independent district for the Garos.
“It is a day Garos gained freedom from the Zamindari system and the Regular Regulations during the British Rule. Garo Hills Day is a red letter day for the Garos. They should celebrate this day with utmost joy and pride. I am one of the signatories of the agreement for strengthening of the ADCs and also elected BJP MDC of Tura so it will be celebrated in my constituency,” he said.
