The Director of Arts and Culture has informed that celebrations leading up to Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 will be held online due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The department is anchoring several programmes in the run-up to the holiday as part of Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary commemoration, which began last year.
A special logo for the Meghalaya celebrations and dedicated Facebook page were launched by the department.
Several events have been chalked out, including a special webinar on the theme ‘Celebrating the Mahatma’, in collaboration with Synod College, to be held on October 2, where the keynote address will be delivered by David Syiemlieh, former Chairperson of the Union Public Service Commission and eminent historian. Another webinar on ‘Gandhiji at 150’ and the relevance of Gandhian philosophy in the 21st century, was held on September 25 with national panelists.
A virtual display of photographs of the Mahatma will be unveiled on October 2, based on archival photos in the custody of the Department of Arts and Culture that were donated by Allahabad Museum. Painting and dance displays, as well as debate, drawing and letter writing competitions will also be a feature of the celebrations.
