Jingjang M. Marak is set to be the Congress party candidate for the upcoming Assembly by-election in Gambegre constituency.
Marak who is a close aide of Tura MP Saleng Sangma is the only applicant for Congress ticket for the by-poll.
His application has been forwarded by the West Garo Hills District Congress Committee to the State Congress leadership.
According to sources, the application which has been approved by the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee will soon be forwarded to the Congress high command for its final decision.
It may be mentioned that Gambegre seat fell vacant after the resignation of sitting Congress MLA Saleng A. Sangma on June 10 following his election as Lok Sabha MP from the Tura parliamentary seat.
However, the Election Commission has yet to announce the date for the by-poll. The by-election has to be held within six months and therefore it could be held sometime in October this year.
Earlier, the NPP has announced the name of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s wife Mehtab Chandee Sangma as the party candidate for the Gambegre by-election.
