Fresh tension grips Lapangap as a clash reportedly broke between villagers along the Assam-Meghalaya border today.
Sources said, farmers were shot at with arrows allegedly by the Karbis from the other side of the border in Tahpat.
Waheh Shnong Deimonmi Lyngdoh said the villagers were shot with arrows and slingshots by the Karbis when they had gone to Tahpat, to tend to their crops. He said a policeman from Saitsama police outpost made a narrow escape when he was shot with an arrow.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up along the inter-state border and no other incident was reported till filing of this report.
Lapangap village is located in the border of West Jaiñtia Hills District and West Karbi Anglong District.
Last week, the dorbar shnong has put up a written request before the West Jaiñtia Hills Deputy Commissioner seeking deployment of central forces in the village to prevent any attempt by local Karbi population to destroy plantations.
In August, Meghalaya police were pelted with stones and fired shots through slingshots in the same area. The team had to retreat to avoid any untoward incident.
It may be mentioned that the first complaint was lodged with the West Jaiñtia Hills Deputy Commissioner in July that a group of people from Karbi Anglong accompanied by Assam police allegedly destroyed thousands of tree saplings planted at a place along the fringes of Tahpat village from a scheme through the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority.
