Mawryngkneng MLA Heavingstone Kharpran today expressed concern in the Assembly over the delay in setting up a fire and emergency station in Mawryngkneng.
Speaking during the budget session, he highlighted the frequent wildfires in the area and the challenges posed by the absence of a fire station.
Responding to the concern, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Prestone Tynsong stated that the project was delayed due to the unavailability of land. However, he informed the house that the government has now acquired 22,000 sq ft of land, which has been handed over to the Home Department by the Deputy Commissioner. “We will soon prepare the detailed project report (DPR) for the construction of the fire station and, once completed, it will be operationalised,” Tynsong assured.
Leader of the opposition Dr Mukul Sangma questioned whether the establishment of fire stations in wildfire-prone areas was being treated as a priority and inquired about the funding source. In response, Tynsong affirmed that the project is a priority and will be funded by the state government. When asked if the State Disaster Mitigation Fund could be utilised for this purpose, Tynsong said the option could be considered.
