Taking advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic, two miscreants attempted to defraud a family in Nongrim Hills by claiming to be from the Dorbar Shnong team working to combat the coronavirus.
Around 9pm yesterday, these two individuals, who are aged around 20 to 25, entered a home and tried to dupe the family concerned into paying them for undertaking a Covid-19 survey, Nongrim Hills Rangbah Shnong Bantyllilang Narry informed Highland Post today.
Fortunately, the family, who were living there on rent, informed their landlord, who then intimated the Dorbar. Suspecting that their ploy was not working, the two would-be fraudsters made a quick getaway.
The Dorbar Shnong has made a public announcement warning residents not to be fooled by such persons and to immediately inform the office of the Dorbar Shnong if such activities are detected again. The Dorbar has also alerted other neighbourhood Dorbars of the scamsters.
Narry said that the family are new tenants and therefore did not recognise the miscreants. An FIR has yet to be filed in the matter.
“We have just come across imposters impersonating members of the Dorbar Shnong and asking people for money in the name of the survey and, who knows, next time these miscreants may come to offer vaccines or commit other mischievous activities, so people should be extra alert and not be duped,” he warned.
