Sankardev College, Shillong commemorated the 61st Foundation Day of the college yesterday.
As part of the celebration, a Graduation Day was organised for the recently passed out degree students of the college. Rajya Sabha MP Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi graced the occasion as the chief guest.
Kharlukhi also presented the Academic Award of Excellence to Hari Lanong who secured third position in Statistics and Kmenshisha Thongni who secured fifth position in Khasi in the recent NEHU Under-Graduate examinations.
He also felicitated the teaching faculty and non-teaching staff to honour their 25 years of dedicated service to the college, namely Dr. Kashinath Chakraborty of the Bengali Department and S Synrem, M Thapa and Bishnu Sharma, all non-teaching staff.
A book entitled “Major Environmental Issues in North East India” edited by the faculty of the Department of Botany and Environmental Science was also released by the chief guest.
Kharlukhi in his speech lauded the many initiatives of the institution and the progress it has made, both qualitatively and quantitatively, and appreciated the tireless efforts put in by the teachers and their immeasurable and invaluable services to the students and society at large.
In all, 155 students who recently graduated in Bachelor of Arts and Science Examinations were presented with citations.
Principal of the College, Dr. Eureka F. Lyngdoh delivered the welcome address which was followed by a motivational lecture for the students from Dr. S Maxwell Lyngdoh.
Also present were the president and members of the college governing body, parents and students of the college.
The vote of thanks was delivered by vice principal Kenneth Chyne. The programme was hosted by another vice principal Dr. Reena Singh.
