Forever Young, an old club of Shillong that has staged many street and stage plays in the city, has urged the State government for financial support for promotion of theatre and for staging a musical play ‘Conscience and Man’.
Forever Young president Michael N. Syiem in a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma yesterday appreciated the State government’s effort to tap the abundant talents available among the youth through schemes like PRIME and CM-ELEVATE.
“Theatre is a non-commercial activity, at least for now in our State, but it is also a stepping stone to commercial ventures like movies and commercial advertising in the State as well as in the national and even international level. To take up this role in nurturing this talent to the next level, we are ready to take up this responsibility to the best of our ability but with the support of the State government especially in terms of financial support because even though theatre is not a profit making activity, the expenditure involved in staging a play is quite high,” Syiem said in the letter.
He also said that Forever Young together with the Mait Shaphrang had been staging several street plays and stage plays in the past both in Khasi and English.
Syiem mentioned that the two organisations had performed two plays on Doordarshan Kendra, Shillong in the past and the ones posted on YouTube include ‘Papa Shano Phi Don’ and ‘Burom Ia Uba Iap’ (both Khasi musicals) and the latest English musical play ‘Juliet and Romeo’.
