During the height of the rainy season, St Jude’s Secondary School at Umpher, Byrnihat, Ri-Bhoi, suffers.
On July 14, with heavy rains hitting the district, the school was inundated with water, flooding its ground floor rooms in several feet of water.
The flood also affected many areas of Jorabat and Byrnihat.
Expressing their concern, the principal of St Jude’s, Brother Shyju PJ, said that the school is flooded every monsoon due to the unavailability of a proper drainage system in the area around National Highway 6.
This situation causes damage and a loss of property in the classrooms, residential area of the teachers and badly affects the studies of the students.
“We had lodged complaints with the district administration and also to the Block Development Officer of Umling block. They conducted several inspections but, still, due to the non-availability or initiative to construct a proper drainage system on the canal that connects National Highway 6 to Assam this problem cannot be solved,” said the principal.
