Just a couple of days after it was suggested that the government’s planned industrial estate in Byrnihat on the current site of the Conservation Training Institute (CTI) could instead be moved to Hima Jirang, the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has voice its opposition to any such idea.
A large body of public opinion has come out against turning the CTI into another industrial site and Jirang MLA Sosthenes Sohtun on Monday had suggested that Hima Jirang could host the industrial estate and that the people of the area are in favour of it.
Today, however, the western zone unit of the FKJGP demurred. Assistant secretary of the pressure group, Polosar Mawiong, said that the FKJGP does not support industries that pollute the environment and adversely affect public health. Byrnihat, he added, is one of the most polluted places in the country, largely due to the already sizeable number of factories present there and the same fate could befall Hima Jirang if an industrial estate comes up there.
